The Varsity team took on El Segundo for the homecoming game. The theme for homecoming was Old Hollywood and in compliance with that the team came blasting through a sign decorated with the phrase “Lights, Camera, Touchdown!”

Homecoming weekend brought out some exciting faces, alumni, students, and parents alike came out to support the game and the night’s other festivities. Looking out into the stands, in their own reserved area, the parents of the top 30 came dressed to the nines in lovely gowns and dashing tuxedos to accompany their kids down the red carpet at half time.

The Torrance team lined up on the field to start the first quarter. The game got off to a phenomenal start; the Tartars scored two quick touchdowns. There would be no mistaking that they had been practicing and their execution was definitely showing it. The first TD being a receiving touchdown carried out by Jake Silverman, where he dodged through the Eagles’ defensive line and ran into the endzone. In the same quarter Silverman would go on to secure another touchdown for the Tartars, but this time from the other side of the ball.

The Eagles lined up on offense in an attempt to get some points up on the board, but they were hopelessly unaware of what the Tartars had in store. As the ball flew through the air aimed directly at an El Segundo player, Silverman pounced and stole the ball mid flight, he fastened it in his arms and took off down the field proving that the Eagles quarterback’s birds eye view was no more than a myth. He trotted past the goal line and the crowd went wild at the superb play.

Into the second quarter the two teams went back and forth in a clash to get and keep the upper hand. El Segundo swept across the field gaining yardage, until finding themselves close enough to where a touchdown was essentially inevitable, yet even after gaining the 6 points the attempt at an extra point was unsuccessful. Getting into the spirit of the game, El Segundo doubled down after the punt return, they got the ball back from the Tartars and scored another touchdown, though once more an attempt at a two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

Though the quarter was not up, with less than a minute still on the clock the Tartar QB Connor Shearing gave the ball to running back Ryan Young; he ran over 60 yards from one half of the field to the other and into the endzone. An astounding play by Young (which would later go towards his stats of 202 yards that game), and an obviously great moment for the team as the sideline rejoiced, jumping up and down congratulating Young. Ending the first half with a score of 21-12.

After recognizing the Top 30 seniors for homecoming, both teams returned to the field to resume the fight to see who would come out on top.

The Tartars came back fired up and refused to let the Eagles get back near the goal line for 12 minutes straight. Young was able to rush through the defense and once again make an extraordinarily far run that ultimately ended with the Torrance High Varsity team back in the endzone, and the kick for an extra point sailed smoothly right through the post.

In the final quarter of the game the crowd was ecstatic, loudly cheering and ready to settle the score once and for all. Unlike Torrance football had planned, El Segundo was able to push the Tartar boys back and score their third and forth TD of the game, then followed one up with a two-point conversion.

Annoyed, the Tartars came back from their huddle with fire in their eyes, they mushed past the Eagles’ defenses and with another great hand off to Young shot straight for the endzone. In the end Torrance won with a score of 35-26.

Frosh/Soph

Since Varsity played at home, the Frosh/Soph team made a trip to El Segundo High School, being greeted with their Eagle hospitality. In their pristine white uniforms, the Tartars enter the field with music in tow, getting hyped up for the match ahead.

In the first quarter, the Tartars got off to a rocky start; after the first kick off, the Eagles ran a pass to the end zone where they made the first touchdown of the game—but the Torrance team was not fazed. The Tartars returned the favor by then, pulling off two touchdowns for themselves with a 2-point conversion after each TD, readjusting the score to 16-7.

Excited for more competition—the Torrance team follows along the sideline as the game progresses. During the second quarter, Freshman quarterback Gibson Turner worked hand in hand with his wide receivers and running back to rack up another two touchdowns with another set of 2-point conversions to combine with their total score!

As both teams moved onto halftime, the score changed for the Tartars to 32 points, yet remained a stagnant 7 for the Eagles.

After an empowering speech and another round of stretches, the Torrance Tartars return to the field to dish out another round of a conquering performance.

Just slightly letting off of the gas, the young Tartars went into the second half gaining another TD, but in return lost freshman wide receiver Elias Emerson when a hit to the ankle caused an old injury to flare back up and swell, immediately sitting him out for the rest of the game.

To wrap up the game Torrance Tartars go out with one more touchdown, without allowing the  Eagles any room to make any final remarks. The game ends with Eagles with a score of 7 and Tartars with a whopping 48.  This gives the Frosh/Soph team a total overall of 7-0 and leaves everyone hopeful for more spectacular games.
