Friday night lights wouldn’t feel the same without the energy of the student section, and at Torrance High School, Maroon Monsoon takes pride in making sure the energy falters. As the official hype club, Maroon Monsoon’s goal is simply to keep the crowd engaged, athletes motivated, and the entire school united in school spirit. Jennah Black (‘26), one of the club’s head representatives, states, “Maroon Monsoon’s main objective is to get the crowd hype and start chants. We mainly correlate with the cheer, drill, and band just to make the game as best as possible for the football team to win, hopefully, and get them hyped and just have a great Friday night experience.”
The student section’s energy doesn’t just stay up in the stands; it carries down onto the field. “I think it impacts the athletes because they see people cheering and wanting them to have success on the field,” Black said. “Boys feed off of energy. So if they see energy, they’ll take that into themselves and then put that out on the field. This year, we’re even trying to get them a hype song. So if they score, then we play their favorite song to get them even more hyped.”
Compared to other schools, Maroon Monsoon strives to stand out. After asking the question, what stands out about Maroon Monsoon compared to other students’ sections? Black answers, “Just by the name title, of course, but I think it’s different because of the energy we produce,” She also added. “This year we’re trying to make it even more hype than the past years. It promotes games to be more fun and creates special memories with the people you know.”
To get the students to pack the stands, promotion is a big part of Maroon Monsoon. Black shares, “I try to make the posts look as flashy as possible so they’ll catch your eyes. We also have a Maroon Monsoon account, so we definitely have to get the word out to friends and make sure everyone shows up.”
For Black, this year is more than just cheering for games. “ I look to accomplish having one of the best senior years and also setting a standard for Maroon Monsoon for the next year,” she said “I want to create more ideas to make the crowd as hype as possible.” With a strong leadership and a section full of spirited students, Maroon Monsoon isn’t just about cheering; it’s also about building a tradition, uniting the school, and prompting unforgettable Friday nights.
