The girls beach volleyball season has come to a closer, and the Tartars finished strong. Last week the girls played against Da Vinci in a league match: out of five duo teams, 4 teams got the win for the match. Some duos to look out for on the sand are seniors Anissa Oliveras and Kaya Herdon, and senior Natalie Brown and junior Bella Cruz.
This season has not been without challenges. These challenges stem from the girls not having a coach at the beginning of the season. Fortunately last year’s coach, known affectionately as Coach Brock stepped up for the role. “When the season started. THS did not have the coaching staff in place; therefore, myself and the team started halfway through the season.” Because of this, the girls were not able to have an offseason they traditionally would have.
But no worries! Although “this season was a little more rocky than last,” sophomore Marlie Larrieu said, the girls are still striving and have set goals for the season. For Larrieu, her goals are to, “try to not be so hard on myself.” Marlie is a sophomore and is currently on JV; partners usually vary from game to game, but Larrieu has mostly been partnered up with sophomore, Alexa Malonzo. The duo has had 8 wins this season.
Transitioning from indoor to beach volleyball definitely isn’t easy. When comparing the two, Marlie says, “I feel like beach is always rougher compared to indoor”. Going from a six-player team to playing only with one partner can be an adjustment, but Coach Brock’s main goal for his team is “to find player combinations, where the girls play well together and also have fun.”
On Tuesday, April 14, the girls had their final match of the season against Peninsula High where the girls unfortunately had no wins. Following soon after is the Pairs Tournament on April 16, where two selected varsity duos will compete. Let’s wish the Tartars good luck!
