Torrance High School celebrates each new season with a colorful, exciting rally to boost school spirit and honor students and staff who have gone above and beyond. It’s an amazing opportunity for students to connect with their graduating class through rally games or friendly competition to earn rally points. As well as various performance clubs, such as drill, cheer, and choir, showcasing their hard work. But what really boosts the energy and spirit is the fun theme of each rally. This spring rally is no different, with its theme of Star Wars with glow in the dark elements. ASB is often the one who brainstorms themes and brings their ideas to reality, working alongside other clubs like TARTAR knights and TARTAR ladies, creating colorful, intricate posters, and also playing a key role in creating fun games that students love.
Simone So (‘27) member of ASB, mentioned this rally’s games include “human pyramid, a game like sharks and minnows, and a relay race that involves glow-in-the-dark patatoes” adding that her “Favorite game for this rally is probably the relay race, it combines a lot of (glow in the dark) elements and gets the crowd really excited.” During the game, the crowd can be heard cheering wildly for their team, and in the junior class, with someone saying, “dude, we were so close. HOW”
A focal point of the games that the audience had often brought up was the glow in the dark effect for the Star Wars theme. For the freshmen, it was their first time seeing this type of rally, and many of them were amazed by the colorful sight. Preston Hoang (‘28), another member of ASB, said he was “most excited for the students to see the Star Wars theme with the posters.” As they added, “a lot of easter eggs, so I’m excited to see the students’ reactions.” with Simone being excited “to show all our councils’ hard work.”
The rally received a plethora of positive responses from students for the intricate posters and the spectacular sight of the gym when the black lights came on. The loud music, while bringing the energy, some students found the music to be “too loud, and it hurts my ears,” voiced (‘28) Lana Nicole Gimeno. Throughout the games, when the black lights were on, game pieces were stuck with glowsticks and lit up in color. Despite the efforts for the game pieces to be more visible, many students said: “It was kinda hard to see the pieces and follow the game” (‘27), Arvin Mitu mentioned.
Each season, ASB works hard to develop new and fun ideas, making each game better than the last. This season’s rally definitely topped all the previous ones, and I am so excited to see what new ideas they come up with in the next rally and what they will do to improve students’ and staff’s experience!
