Swim is a unique sport that consists of over 16 individual events and three relays for both boys and girls.
Leading the team are several returning swimmers who made a strong impact last year. Last year, the team won their 400m free relay for CIF Division 4, which consisted of two freshmen and two seniors. This year, they are ready to come back even better. So far, the Tartars have been doing really well, with a bunch of new personal records broken. With prelims coming up on April 27 and finals being on the 29, freshmen this year are already setting some team goals and personal goals, “a few goals for our team would probably be for us to all try our best and enjoy swim, and some personal goals of mine include breaking 40 on the 50m back and making it to 1:10 on the 100 free,” said junior varsity swimmer Jean Park.
Swim events include 50 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters, and 500 meters freestyle. The only short-course event varsity swimmers compete in is the 50 free, while junior varsity does the 100 free. There are also events like the 200-meter and 400-meter relays and a free medley. This consists of 50m free, breaststroke, butterfly, and backstroke. Sophomore Kayla Kasterko says these are her favorite events, “I would say the relays are my favorite to watch, everyone is always cheering, it’s always either the first or last event, and it’s a great way to start/end the meet. It’s honestly my favorite to participate in, very intense and a lot of pressure, but it relieves me that I can compete with not only my teammates but my friends.”
The swim team is ready for a new successful season, driven by hardworking and talented students from all grades.
