As seniors continue to explore their options for the future, many plan to take the community college route. This offers a financially feasible option for students, while also giving them a chance to figure out their next steps.
On Friday 13, 2026, some seniors who showed interest in El Camino took a field trip to the campus. They reported exploring the campus, meeting the counselors there, and getting an idea of what the campus life was like. Ruth George, a senior who’s been attending Torrance for four years, states, “While I was there, I learned about the honors program at El Camino College and the opportunities it offers for students who want more challenging classes. I also learned how college gives students more independence and responsibility compared to high school.” Something unique about community college is that they still offer many opportunities to be challenged and learn, without the expensive price tag of a university. It’s a good transition point to learn balancing responsibilities and new independence.
For those of you who don’t know, El Camino College was founded in 1947, and has been a strong school since. The campus is beautifully set up with brick buildings as well as a stadium and practice field, tennis courts and beach volleyball courts. Additionally, the campus has a relatively good social life. Ruth reported, “I felt like the campus had a good balance between academics and social life. It seemed like a place where students can focus on their studies but also have time to relax and be involved in different activities.”
Out of the many students who attended this event at El Camino, many reported that it was helpful and informational, and that it helped them feel prepared for the next steps. Ruth explains that her favorite part was just the experience of going there and exploring, “The most memorable part was taking a tour of the campus with our tour guides. They were engaging and made the experience more enjoyable by sharing their personal experiences and funny stories about various locations. They also provided answers to all the questions our group had about El Camino” Melanie Torres explained, “The leaders/instructors were super nice and made the trip fun. I learned about all the support groups and clubs el co has, which was interesting.”
No matter where these students decide to go to college, the field trip was a fun memory nobody will forget, giving them information that will shape their decisions but more importantly giving them a journey.
