ASB Elections

April means it’s time for baseball and ASB elections.

At Torrance High School there are many different opportunities to showcase key attributes such as leadership, unity, and resilience. One of these very opportunities includes the elective of ASB where students have the chance to demonstrate their school spirit. The ASB class consists of all four grades, as each class year is represented by members. The process that these ASB members must go through is an election process where all students are welcome to vote. Every school year, in the month of April there are public speeches given by courageous students who are running for ASB positions to persuade the audience to vote for them. Students also post on their social media platforms to encourage viewers with their catchy phrases and trendy videos. It is that time of the year once again where ASB applications are up for grabs and speeches in the auditorium are just around the corner. The student speeches this year are in the last week of April and ASB applications are due by Thursday, April 8th. Every year there are many running for positions against others, but there is a chance you might just get lucky with no competitors, which hands you the role by default, without the extra measures of a speech. The most important roles in ASB include President and Vice President as they can be seen as the role models not just for this class, but for all of Torrance High School.

Students that are elected are placed into the ASB class, usually during fourht period.   This elective unifies all grade levels to work together in coherence for the benefit of Torrance High School. Preston Hoang (2028) has been in ASB for 2 years of high school and has played a major part as he is the president for the current sophomore class. He explains that ASB “works on the majority of all the big events you see at Torrance High, by breaking our work up into specialized committees.” Events such as rallies take everyone in ASB to execute their role so the students can enjoy.  Although it might seem that being a part of this class can be lots of work at times, the social aspect is also an appealing factor for all candidates. Hoang (2028) recommends ASB for all applicants as he is passionate when he says, “You make it what you want it to be.” When he says this, he refers to leadership roles, clearly saying that you can enjoy the ride or you can ask “are we there yet” hundreds of times.

There are a handful of positions that students are able to apply for. These include: Secretary, Treasurer, ICC President, Service League President, Commissioner of Activities, Commissioner of Athletics, Commissioner of Academics, Commissioner of Arts and Spirit, and Human Relations President. A mouthful of roles, but it keeps the Associate Student Body together. All of these roles are at any student’s grasp during this election duration. Volunteering to run for any position in ASB requires bravery and great confidence. It is an accomplishment enough to submit an application even if you do not achieve the selection for the part. Good luck to all those running for the school year of 2026-2027, and remember to vote!
