The Torrance High School girls soccer team participated in the annual South Tournament on Saturday, December 6th, at South High School, facing Marymount and Santa Monica in two competitive matchups that offered early-season insight into the team’s progress.
Torrance opened tournament play with a strong performance against Marymount, earning a 2–0 victory. Kaya Herndon and Jennah Black each found the back of the net, with Black also getting an assist. Torrance controlled possession for most of the match and limited Marymount’s scoring opportunities, securing the first win. Senior Isabella Salas emphasized the importance of the result, saying, “These victories are a testament to the determination and capability we have as a team, giving us reassurance of what we can bring to the pitch when league play comes around.”
The Tartars carried their momentum into their second matchup against Santa Monica, securing another win by a 2–1 score. Karina Barry and Abby Montenegro scored for Torrance, helping the team establish a lead they maintained through organized defense and disciplined play. According to Salas, ball control played a major role in the team’s success. “As a team we really focused on playing the ball and keeping possession as we succeed most with the ball at feet,” she said. “We also emphasized challenging every ball and flying our outside backs in attack to create an advantage, which helped us win both defensively and offensively.”
With two wins in the tournament, Torrance demonstrated early-season confidence and balance on both sides of the field. The South Tournament served as a productive start to the preseason as the Tartars looked ahead to the remainder of tournament play and the upcoming regular season.
