During the holidays, families in America celebrate by eating a big feast. The big feast includes several sides such as stuffing, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and many more flavors. However, depending on the different families, the main dish is either ham or turkey. The turkey represents a symbol of harvest, but in modern times, ham has been a new addition to the menu.
Turkey is usually cooked with a fusion of different spices such as garlic, thyme, rosemary, lemon, and more. Ham is cooked with brown sugar, cloves, and cinnamon. So they are pretty different from each other. Everyone has different opinions on whether they like to eat ham or turkey on Thanksgiving. Some like the sweet, candied taste of ham, while others like the juicy white meat of a turkey. Some like to stay traditional and eat turkey like they always have, while others like to change it up to ham. A lot of people like to eat turkey, though, because of the tradition wishbone that you can pull apart.
We interviewed different students at our school, asking what they prefer and what their family does on Thanksgiving. Abby Montenegro (2028) and Addison Wall (2028) both agreed that “ham is better than turkey.” They both like the sweet taste of ham and the brown sugary sauce that pairs well with Thanksgiving food. Kai Martinez (2028) also agreed that ham is better since he said, “Turkey is too dry and flavorless.” Some said they just eat ham on Thanksgiving or just turkey, while others say they eat both. Elise Martinez (2028) said that “Turkey is better because ham is too sweet and when I’m eating dinner I don’t want something sweet.” So there were several different opinions on which is better, but the majority seems to agree that ham takes the crown. For future generations, will the Thanksgiving turkey come to an end? Is it just going to be ham at the dinner table from now on? According to Google’s AI overview, about 80% of Americans eat or purchase turkey on Thanksgiving, and about 20% eat ham, so turkey is still more popular, but ham is slowly but surely gaining popularity.
