Coach Irvine Retires as Flag Football Coach

Led Torrance High to 3 straight league titles.

With the Girls Flag Football Team’s season coming to a wrap, Coach Kyle Irvine announced his retirement from the program. After three years of building and shaping the program, Irvine leaves behind a legacy that players, families, and the school community will never forget.

When Coach Irvine first stepped onto the field in 2023, he shared one of his favorite memories, being struck by the excitement of the girls who were eager to learn the game he loves. “Seeing the excitement in the girls knowing I was going to teach them the game of football, the sport I love,” he shared. From that first day, Irvine’s passion, commitment, and drive became the base of Torrance’s growing program.

During his three years as head coach, Irvine helped guide the team to success. Torrance’s varsity team earned the title of undefeated league champions for three straight years, securing CIF appearances and celebrating multiple standout athletes, including two League MVPs. But despite these accomplishments, Irvine says the wins aren’t what he’s most proud of. Instead, it’s the team’s “will and determination to win and not give up,” qualities he believes will stay with his players for life.

For many athletes, Coach Irvine’s impact went far beyond the scoreboard. Sophomore Abigail Montenegro shared that she wasn’t completely shocked by his retirement, knowing how much he values coaching at the highest level possible, but it still hit close to home. She recalls some of her favorite memories being the moments when she would joke around at practice and Coach Irvine would laugh with the team instead of getting upset.  What she will miss most is “how well he understood each player and how he always accommodated everyone’s differences.”

Although stepping away from coaching full-time, Coach Irvine says he still plans to attend games and support the girls when he can. What he will miss most are the daily interactions, the smiles, the laughter, and watching the athletes grow every single day.

As Torrance says goodbye to the first coach in its girls’ flag football history, Irvine leaves with deep gratitude. “It was an honor to be part of the Torrance High School Girls Flag Football program,” he said. “ I have memories that will remain with me forever.”

His legacy, built on determination, joy, and love for the game, will continue to shape Torrance’s flag football program for years to come.
