Every day, students enter classrooms and focus on lectures, classwork, projects, and more, but how often do we stop to consider what our teachers are wearing? Why do educators make the fashion choices they make and what is their motivator and unique inspiration behind their choices? We asked this question to seven teachers and staff members and here is what they had to say:
“Comfort, all about comfort, because it’s always very hot in here. Plus, I go to the gym after school so I dress in gym clothes so I don’t have to change,” says Mr. Chung.
“I dress a lot for comfort and generally being able to move around, because I never know where the day will take me.” – Ms. Jenson
“Because it’s comfortable, and sometimes I really lean into the whole Japanese teacher thing because it’s a lot of fun. […] Do you see these shoes? It’s a map of the Tokyo subway system.” – Sensei Jones
“Comfort. I stand all day: I want to be able to move around the classroom, and I dress for what I think looks good for my body type.” – Mrs. Spence
“I dress the way I do to feel good about myself. Since becoming a librarian I also love to dress for comfort, and you also have to look good to feel good.” – Ms. Fox
“I dress for comfort. I go with what I call “California Casual” – that’s my style.” – Ms. Spradlin
Looking back on the diverse fashion choices of our educators, it’s clear that comfort and functionality are central to their choices, each adapting for their lifestyle and preferences. From Japanese styled attire to workout clothes so they can bust a move at a moment’s notice, all of these teachers have understanding of what their roles demand. So, yes, they all dress for comfort, but they find new and fun ways to express themselves while staying comfy.
