The winter season is picking up for Torrance High athletes, which means the Torrance Track Team is preparing for tryouts and a long season ahead of them.
Athletes transferring from the fall season officially began training on December 2nd, but other students interested in trying out for the team are encouraged to reach out to Coach Irvine, the head coach of the track team.
“I wanted to get into a sport and get in shape, and get fast.” Cameron Napier says on why he joined track. Napier is a Junior who is currently a Varsity hurdler. “[It’s] intense, sometimes, but other times carefree.”
Napier’s goals for the season are to “break my PRs and do well,” he says with a chuckle.
This year, the head coach promises many changes to the program from previous years, including Coach Stevenson, a new coach for the distance team who started last season.
Torrance also moved from the Pioneer League to the Bay League, featuring a whole slew of highly competitive schools including Mira Costa, one of the top schools in the nation.
“[I want to] just beat Mira Costa, Redondo, and Penn,” says Stevenson, who’s gotten to know the team better. “They have the best distance runners, I wanna be able to beat them.”
“I talked to another coach, me and him are gonna work together to make [the team] better runners.” Stevenson says, talking about a new volunteer coach who will also be helping with the team a few times a week.
The first wave of tryouts took place on December 7th, but athletes will have another chance to try out on January 11th at Zamperini Stadium.
The coaches are planning to spend winter break and the weeks leading up to it training for their respective tryouts. Anyone with questions about tryouts is encouraged to reach out to Coach Irvine at [email protected].
