His name is Edgar Allen P- Oh wait. Those are ravens.
Crows and ravens have gotten a reputation for being quite intelligent. As birds, a lot of people think they’re a little on the stupid side. However, both ravens and crows show signs of extreme intelligence. Let’s go over some of the amazing things they can do!
Extreme motor functions
Crows possess a skill known as accuracy. All of the parts of it’s body are extremely accurate. They’re able to fly with grace in harsh environments with strong winds. It’s feet are great at gripping onto the walls of a fence or landing on a small pole. It’s beak is extremely accurate. Capable of grasping things and picking at food from small crevices. Multiple experiments have shown that it can pick up small objects and move them around very accurately. It’s all hard wired into their brain that they need to be good at moving if they wanna survive this world! You can see multiple cool videos like this one that show that crows are a lot more agile than their other feathery counterparts.
Intelligence
Along with its superior motor skills, it’s also got a knack for being quite a smartie pants. There are many examples of what a crow’s intelligence is capable of. So many in fact, I’ll make a list!
- Peaking in problem solving, the crow has remarkable logic. There are numerous videos online about how a crow solved a complex puzzle for food. It took him a few minutes to figure it out. But the solution was remarkably complex! Something even us humans may not be able to initially figure out. Check out this remarkable video of a crow solving an 8 step puzzle.
- It’s memory is extremely long for a bird. Crows can remember faces exceptionally well and because of their social nature, they can communicate with other birds to pass information. This information could be a load of things. But on the topic of faces, it can remember and identify faces to link them to rewards or hostility. Check out this article on crows remembering faces! Their memory is remarkable!
- Crows and ravens are very social creatures. Despite one moving with a pack and one not, they will always pass down information to their fellow birds. They may be territorial but they look out for each other! This means information can pass down from one crow to the whole city’s crows! And quickly at that. If you remember what i said about faces, they pass that information down as well. Meaning if 1 crow knows you’re bad news, the whole flock is gonna know.
- High emotional intelligence. Crows possess high emotional intelligence! If you’ve ever seen stories online about crows laughing at people crying, they are doing it on purpose. They’re able to tell between happy, sad, angry…and they’ll know if it’s a negative or positive emotion. So if they “laugh” at you and you cry harder, they know what they’re doing!
Because of all these reasons, we should stop mistreating crows as birds. Instead, we should be happy to be blessed with such interesting animals! Crows are not only intelligent, but they understand emotions, have a really remarkable memory, are social creatures and have high logic perception.
How cool is that?
