The Tartars did it again; this year Tartar Football made it back to the CIF Southern Section Playoffs Games; alas they made a swift exit after their first round game against the Summit High SkyHawks, facing a 7-37 loss.
As a result from last year’s successful season the Torrance Tartars were moved up from Division 10 to compete in the Division 5 brackets.
The Summit High SeaHawks have had a pretty impressive season thus far: an overall of 10-1, only having lost to Beaumont High—a Division 2 school—five shutout wins, an 8-win streak, and having the #1 defensive end in the country.
To begin, the SkyHawks moved quickly in the first half to get points on the board. Two touchdowns (TDs): both rushing TDs by the SkyHawk running backs.
The Tartars came back with a TD in the second quarter with a 5-yard pass by Gibson Turner to Jake Silverman, leaving the score 7-14 at halftime.
In the second half, Summit made another 2 rushing touchdowns and a safety in the third quarter. The SkyHawks’ cornerback Jayden Dunn also managed to complete two interceptions in the third quarter. In all Summit managed to accumulate a total score of 30-7 by the end of the third quarter.
Finally, in the last quarter stretch, Summit finalized the score with a final TD with 9 minutes left in the game. For the rest of the game both teams gave and took a few yards while the clock wound down.
As he watched the time run out Torrance senior varsity offensive lineman Nicholas Chavez describes feeling his “world was crashing, like the end of a chapter, I didn’t want to accept it… It’s just a lot of emotions, trying to hold in everything and trying to stay locked in at the same time, and dealing with the fact that we lost.”
