Ghost of Tsushima is in the hall of fame for being one of the greatest video games of all time. Its expansive and expressive story paired with a beautiful open world made a combination of awesome characters and an emotional plot. It’s generally considered a good 10/10 modern video game set in Japan during the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274.
Following that is the sequel to that story, Ghost of Yotei. Which is set 300 years after the events of Tsushima. Their color schemes are very different and the main character has changed as well. During the premiere of the first teaser trailer, everyone was excited to see the new game reveal from SuckerPunch. The developers behind Ghost of Tsushima and numerous other games, trusted in the industry as one of the best. However despite their golden reputation, the new teaser’s premiere was filled with sexist comments.
Most of the comments were similar to something along the lines of “Seriously? A female protagonist ” or “I don’t want to play as a girl” and so on. Most of it was mixed in with a few other gamers who applauded the character, were excited to play the new release next year or simply didn’t care to complain.
“I don’t care as long as the character is cool and awesome. And she looks cool and awesome” – anonymous
“People seriously need to grow ** up.” – anonymous
“We see one girl and there goes the better half of the internet. What happened to freedom and liberty?” – anonymous (poking at this side of the gaming community mainly being composed of players who may enjoy the game, Helldivers II. Not confirmed to be true)
However strange though, these hateful gamers had reasoning to their rage. Saying that most of their experience with Jin Sakai has shaped their vision of the game and that the sequel should follow that same character. Without spoilers, “Jin Sakai’s story was meant to be completed with the first game. Extending it to a second game would ruin his character”. And I couldn’t agree more.
The truth is, video games have always had a very misogynistic and discriminatory community. There’s always some kind of hate revolving an LGBTQ+ character or a female protagonist. It’s an extremely saddening issue that’s been a huge problem among the gaming community. The problem’s root is where gaming originated from. Where “gaming” was considered a male hobby. This has significantly improved ever since gaming became a more accessible source of entertainment, but it doesn’t take the misogyny out of the community. Problems like this ruin the image of playing games and closes the community off.
Outrage like this makes gamers seem dumb. And most of them kind’ve are if comments like this exist. People are criticizing Sucker Punch or say that “they betrayed us”.
Can’t we all just be mature for once? Please.
