This past Friday Torrance High faced off against Rio Hondo Prep bested the Kares with a final score of 28-21.
A few exciting incidents took place at the varsity Torrance Football game this past Friday; both teams would score a touchdown (TD) in the first three plays of the game, and a game saving interception at the near end of the game.
Tartar running back Malikai Johnson got off to an explosive start running for a 76-yard TD in the first play of the game.
“My first thought was ‘man, I’m so gassed right now,’” declares Johnson, still he was a little worried about the tricky move as he recounts he was almost caught in the middle of his run a few times.
Right behind them, Rio Hondo—in the third play of the game—would return the favor and score a 67-yard touchdown, evening out the scores; and throughout most of the game, the score remained pretty much even, when one team made a TD, the other was not far to follow.
With two strong teams—Torrance coming with a 4 win streak, and the Rio Hondo Prep Kares with a 5 win streak—tensions were high during the game, neither team wanted to surrender their winning streaks and were playing to the best of their abilities.
During the last minutes of the fourth quarter the Torrance team was up by 7 points, but on defense; Rio Hondo was progressing towards the end zone, getting ready to even out the score.
To prevent Rio Hondo from tying the score the Tartars “focused up and locked in;” mentions Johnson, where Tartar defensive back Vaughn Reinert intercepted a pass by the Kares’ quarterback, getting Torrance back on offense to run out the clock.
Now the Torrance team—with a 5-0 record—will start their league series this upcoming Friday, playing against the Redondo Union Sea Hawks.
