The Torrance High Football team traveled to El Segundo High where they challenged and bested the Eagles with a 38-19 win on Friday.
Last year when the Tartars and Eagles faced each other, the Torrance team walked away with a win, but team captain and linebacker Julio Sula explains that they “knew they were going to be a different team than last year and we knew that if we wanted to win we would treat them like any other team,” so they would move accordingly.
Even though it seemed like the Eagles were on the rise with a 3-1 overall score and 2 win streak, the Tartar team got onto the field and played a heavy defensive game, and kept a lead for virtually the entire game.
It was expected that the teams would be engaged in a tug of war of sorts and in the beginning that’s exactly what was happening. In the first quarter, both Torrance and El Segundo would score a touchdown (TD) right behind each other, moving the score to tie at 7-7.
Into the second quarter the Torrance team took off with a lead, gaining another 10 points to El Segundo’s additional 3. Again in the third quarter, the Tartars would gain 7 points while the Eagles would complete another field goal; progressing the score to 24-13. In the last quarter the Eagles would make one last touchdown—but the attempt for an extra point was blocked—and Torrance would score 2 more TDs, amassing the score to a final 19 point lead in the Tartar’s favor.
The Tartars last touchdown was made in the last few minutes of the game even though the score was already showing 31-19, Jaden Holley—offensive lineman and a team captain—shares,“ our coaches preach play through till the 4 quarter buzzer is rung and that’s exactly what they did.”
Now, with a 4-0 overall Torrance Football is moving on to play Rio Hondo Prep this Friday.
Last year the Tartars visited the Kares and left defeated from a score of 29-9; currently, Rio Hondo has an overall score of 5-0, the Torrance team is working toward retribution in their next game—encouraged to play even harder.
“This year I’m expecting revenge,” comments Holley. One thing both Holley and Sula agree on is the team’s 1-0 mentality; a fresh start every week for every.
