Last week the Torrance Refinery had a gas leak which was smelt throughout the school. The gas leak was identified near North High School. North High School had to go into lockdown as a result of the smell while here at Torrance High School, classes were disrupted all over campus, but in B and C buildings the smell was the worst. In Ms. Rashid’s AP Physics class she passed out face masks. When asked about her experience Mrs. Spence stated this about her biology classes: “I did not realize that there was a gas leak until one of the other science teachers told me. I was doing an activity in class involving seaweed and just thought that the smell was from the seaweed. I am glad that the fumes were not toxic, but luckily in my classroom the smell wasn’t too horrible.” The Torrance Refinery gas leak caused notable disruption to class across campus and at other schools in the district. While some classes experienced more disruption than others teachers handled the situation effectively so that students can have the best learning environment.
